Scientific studies have shown that regular exercise and a calcium-rich diet can build and maintain good bone health and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

No matter how good your diet is, the fact remains that nearly 80% of American women do not consume the recommended amount of calcium to help maintain healthy bone structure and, therefore, could benefit from calcium supplements.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body. Your body needs calcium every day for a variety of functions like muscle contraction, blood clotting and nerve function. When it doesn't get enough, it takes the necessary amount from your bones, thereby weakening them. This is compounded even further during the menopausal years when estrogen levels drop. A decrease in estrogen accelerates bone loss. That is why taking a daily calcium supplement is important in maintaining healthy bone structure as you age.

The chart below illustrates the rapid decline in bone mass that occurs in women over the age of 40.

This loss of bone mass is due in part to the drop in estrogen associated with menopause.

Calcium supplements can help reduce this bone loss erosion.
